FREEPORT, Bahamas (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team succumbed to No. 15 Baylor, 78-48, in the opening round of the Junkanoo Jam at the St. George's High School gymnasium on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Knights (1-5) took a quick 3-1 lead as they contained the Lady Bears' offense for the opening three minutes of the game and did not allow a field goal until the 17:12 mark. Sparked by sophomore Rachel Allison's jumper, BU (5-1) went on a 10-0 run to pull away and owned a 37-20 advantage at the half.
Freshman Kristin Thomas (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) put up three quick points for the Golden Knights at the start of the second period before Baylor regained their momentum. The Lady Bears continued to extend their lead despite UCF's best attempts for a comeback.
With just under three minutes to play, the Golden Knights dominated possession of the ball, scoring seven unanswered points. Junior guard Lashaunda Slade (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./S. Broward HS) capped off the run with a three-pointer at 2:12.
On the afternoon, UCF shot 17-for-57 (29.8%) from the field, while BU hit 28-of-56 (50%). Senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) led the Golden Knights with 10 points, while Baylor senior forward Bernice Mosby netted a game-high 16.
Baylor also held a slight 39-34 advantage on the boards. BU's Allison and UCF senior guard Celeste Hudson (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) each had a game-high eight rebounds.
The Golden Knights take on Virginia in the Junkanoo Jam Lucaya Division consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m. UCF's next home game is against Georgia Southern on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in the UCF Arena.
