Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF rowing team is set to compete in its second event of the fall schedule this Saturday at the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Golden Knights will face a strong field that features some of top South Region teams from the 2005 season, including Tennessee, Duke, and Texas. That trio all finished in the top six of the South Region last year.
This will be the second straight year UCF has competed in this event. Last year, the Knights "A" boat placed fourth out of 24 teams as the Tennessee "A" boat captured the Championship Eight race.
The Knights have a total of five boats entered in three events, the varsity "A", "B", and "C" boats will race in the Women's Championship Eight race which is set to start at 10:45 a.m. The Women's Lightweight Eight race will start at 8:30 a.m. and the Women's Freshmen/Novice Eight race will start at 9:35 a.m.
The course is located on the Chattahoochee River in downtown Chattanooga. The 5,000-meter course is known for various obstacles that the rowers will have to negotiate such as bridges and a narrow section near the finish line.
"This will be our first test of the season to see how we stack up against the competition in the south region," head coach Leeanne Crain said. "I hope to get a good indication of how we are progressing with the fall training segment. The team is ready to put their training to the test this weekend. We're looking for some good results."
In last weekend's first action of the fall season, the varsity "D" boat took third in the Hatter Classic in Deland, Fla. UCF had five of the six boats competing in the Freshman/Novice Eight race. The Knights took the top four spots led by the "A" boat.
