ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF volleyball team will raise funds for breast cancer research on Friday when it holds its "Dig for the Cure" event at the UCF Arena. The Golden Knights host Conference USA foe UTEP at 7 p.m.
The Golden Knights are one of 26 teams nationally who are dedicating a match in 2006 to raise money for breast cancer research for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Fans can help the team raise funds for the Komen Foundation by pledging money per dig earned ($1 or $00.10) by the Golden Knights in the match, or by making flat donations. Checks can be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
"Dig for the Cure" was started in 2003 by the volleyball team at Charlotte. A year ago, Charlotte, along with several other programs across the country, raised a combined $22,000 for the Komen Foundation. This season, all 12 teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference are scheduled to participate, as well as squads from the ACC, BIG EAST and Conference USA.
The Komen Foundation was established in 1982. Today, the foundation is a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
Those interested in pledging money or making a donation for UCF's "Dig for the Cure" event should contact Suzi Katz (skatz@mail.ucf.edu) at (407) 823-3555. Pledges will also be collected prior to the match at the arena.
The Golden Knights will be playing at home for the first time since Oct. 15. Live audio of the match is available at www.ucfathletics.com.
