ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team (0-2) makes its 2006-07 home debut against Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 in the opening round of the UCF Golden Knights Tournament. In the first game of the night, Bowling Green (1-1) takes on Albany (1-1) at 5 p.m. The winners of the two contests meet in the tournament championship at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, while the losers compete in the consolation game at 3 p.m.
The Golden Knights are looking to rebound after dropping a 64-44 decision at Appalachian State and taking a 67-49 loss at Southeastern Louisiana last weekend. Senior Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./S. Broward HS) recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds at Southeastern Louisiana and enters the Golden Knights Tournament atop the team's stat sheet with 13 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
Beginning with the game against Fairleigh Dickinson, the Golden Knights are set to play five games over the next nine days. Included in the schedule are match-ups with former Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville and 2005 NCAA Champion and current No. 16 ranked Baylor as well as possible meetings with two other teams - Bowling Green and Virginia, who are also receiving votes in the national polls.
FDU opened the season with a 70-61 loss at Manhattan on Nov. 13 and has remained idle since then. Two Knights recorded double-doubles in the contest as freshman forward Christy Altamirano poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and junior forward Jennifer Walkling contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Friday night marks the fifth meeting between UCF and FDU with the Golden Knights owning a 4-0 lead in the series. The last game was a 72-63 UCF win in the Golden Knights Classic on Dec. 4, 1999.
After losing 77-63 to La Salle in its season opener, Albany upended Siena, 72-52, at the Pepsi Arena on Wednesday night. Four players are averaging double figures in scoring through two games as freshman guard Britney McGee leads the pack with 16 points per game followed by senior guard Amanda Ward with 14 points per outing.
Among the teams receiving votes in both the USA Today/ESPN and Associated Press national polls, Bowling Green enters the weekend's tournament with a 1-1 mark. The Falcons opened the season with a 68-37 win at Detroit before falling at Notre Dame in overtime, 85-81. Senior forwards Megan Thornburn and Carin Horne lead BGSU's offense as they are each averaging 13.5 points per game. Horne is also the top rebounder, pulling down 6.5 boards an outing.
