BOONE, N.C. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior guard Whitney Tossie scored a game-high 22 points to lead host Appalachian State (1-0) to a 64-44 win over UCF (0-1) at the Holmes Center on Saturday afternoon.

UCF senior Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) scored the opening bucket and the two teams stayed within four points until the 11:22 mark when a jumper by junior forward Courtney Cunningham sparked an 8-1 run that put ASU up 20-9.

The Golden Knights chipped away the advantage and Houston hit a pair of free throws to cut the Mountaineers lead to 28-21 at intermission.

A jumper by senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) brought UCF within five points to start the second half, but ASU pulled ahead 38-25 on a 10-2 run that was capped off by senior guard Carleena Costner's layup at 15:29.

UCF held ASU without a field goal for the final 1:43 of the game. Senior center Elizabeth Fieser (Norwich, Kan./Norwich HS) hit a layup off a fast break to cap off the contest.

Throughout the game, the Golden Knights were able to capitalize on their opportunities at the foul line, going 12-for-19 (63.2%) on the afternoon. They also held a slight 40-39 advantage on the boards.

Miles and Houston scored a team-high seven points, while junior guard Amber Long (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS) and freshman guard Kristin Thomas (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) contributed six points each. Both Miles and Thomas pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

ASU senior forward Jaime Bennett recorded a game-high 11 boards.

The Golden Knights continue their two-game road swing at Southeastern Louisiana on Monday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the UCF Arena. Tickets for home contests are available by calling (407) UCF-1000.
