TULSA, Okla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior Todd Goddard recorded two goals as No. 3 seed Tulsa defeated No. 6 seed UCF, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.
Tulsa opened up the scoring in the 25th minute. Sophomore Joe Salem netted his first goal of the season from 10 yards with assists to senior Matt Thomas and sophomore Eric Defreitas. The Golden Hurricane added a second goal by freshman Joe Parada ten minutes later. The play started when freshman Hunter Christiansen passed the ball to junior Eric Burkholder, who crossed it to Parada at the goal mouth.
Even as Defreitas added a third goal for TU in the 53rd minute, the Golden Knights' offense pressured the hosts and tested Tulsa goalkeeper Tyrel Lacey, forcing him to make four saves in the second half.
Despite UCF's efforts, Goodard netted the first of his two goals in the 63rd minute with the second coming 10 minutes later.
Although Tulsa outshot the Golden Knights 24-16 during the match, corner kicks were even at six each. Lacey made seven saves, while UCF junior goalkeeper Brian Pope had six.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 9-9-0 on the year and advance to the tournament semifinals, where they face No. 4 seed Kentucky on Friday. The Golden Knights, who fell to 6-9-2, were eliminated.
