Nov. 9, 2006

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Although the fall season has already wrapped up, the UCF women's golf team continues to make headlines as head coach Emilee Klein announced Thursday that Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Knights beginning in 2007-08. Detlefsen is considered the best high school player in the state of Minnesota by the Star Tribune, while she also had a very productive summer on the national scene.

Katie Detlefsen - Eagan, Minn./Minnehaha Academy
Detlefsen has been a Class 1A (Minnesota's top division) all-state and all-conference golfer since the seventh grade. Competing for Minnehaha Academy, she has gone undefeated in both high school matches and invitationals dating back to her sophomore year. Meanwhile, she became the first female golfer to win three consecutive Class 1A individual state titles, and the third in Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) history. That includes setting the tournament record with a 70-72--142 in 2004, while she broke her own record in 2006 with a 69-71--140. Detlefsen has a chance to become the first golfer ever, either on the boys' side or the girls' side, to claim four straight when the 2007 tournament is held at the end of May.

Detlefsen ranks 84th in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Polo Golf Rankings after earning 82.50 total points during the summer. She claimed first place at the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic, firing rounds of 72, 72 and 75 to win the title. Detlefsen also tied for fourth at the CORE Reality Holdings Junior Championships and tied for eighth at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship.

The 2004 Minnesota Golf Association Player of the Year, Detlefsen was the 2005 Minnesota Women's State Match Play Championship Medalist, the 2005 Minnesota Jr. Girls State Champion and the 2005 Minnesota Jr. PGA State Champion.

The UCF women's team opens the spring season Feb. 23-25 at the Lady Puerto Rico, and will host the UCF Challenge March 5-6 at Grand Cypress Golf Club. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
