ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF men's tennis head coach Bobby Cashman announced the Golden Knights' 2007 spring schedule on Monday. The slate features 12 home matches, including contests against Conference USA foes Memphis, Southern Miss and UAB.
The Golden Knights will face seven opponents who finished last season in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
"This is an extremely tough schedule," said Cashman. "The schedule is difficult by design as it will help prepare us for the Conference USA Championship in April. The league championship will be a competitive event again and we need to play our best to be successful."
The season will begin on Jan. 27 when the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman come to Orlando to take on the Golden Knights at the UCF Tennis Complex.
Early in the season, the Golden Knights will head north to face off against two Ivy League opponents in Penn and Princeton. In late March, the team will once again travel to Idaho to compete in Boise State's Spring Break Tournament.
UCF returns five letterwinners from last year's squad that went 11-10 overall. Senior Ener Gursoy, who missed all of last year with an injury, is also back. Cashman also welcomes one freshman, Johan Beigart, to the team.
In addition to Bethune-Cookman, the Golden Knights also face in-state opponents, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, USF, Stetson, Jacksonville and North Florida. The team will face perennial power Miami at home on Feb. 11.
UCF will also play Florida in Gainesville on Jan. 31. Florida finished with a 17-8 record in 2006 and ended the season as the 15th ranked team in the nation. On March 16, the Golden Knights will matchup with Clemson, a squad that finished last season ranked 24th nationally, in Coral Gables.
The C-USA Championship begins April 20 in Houston.
All home matches are played at the UCF Tennis Complex and admission is free. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel, log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
