ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Freshman Phillippe Aubry (Winter Springs HS) came off the bench to score the game-winning goal as the UCF men's soccer team shutout Stetson, 1-0, at the UCF Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights (5-8-2) recorded their third shutout of the year against a Florida opponent as they went 3-0 versus in-state rivals this fall. They also defeated North Florida, 2-0, and Conference USA foe Florida International, 1-0, earlier in the season.
The two teams battled for possession in the first half. Although Stetson (6-10-2) posted an 8-4 advantage in shots, UCF owned the lead in corner kicks at 3-0. It was on a throw in by sophomore Jake Howard (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson HS) that Aubry scored his first collegiate goal, sending the ball low into the right corner in the 41st minute.
Stetson finished the contest with a 14-5 margin in shots, while UCF had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Brian Pope (Durham, N.H./Oyster River HS) made three saves to record his second consecutive shutout, while sophomore Alessandro Barcherini stopped two for the Hatters.
"I am very happy with the win today. We were really able to showcase our depth because we were able to give some of the players that haven't logged a lot of time lately a chance to earn a significant amount of minutes," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "Everyone gave us a great effort."
UCF travels to Tulsa, Okla. to take on C-USA rival Marshall on Monday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. in a rescheduled match. The contest was originally slated for Sept. 30 in Huntington, W.Va., but was postponed due to poor field conditions.
The 2006 Conference USA Championship begins on Wednesday, Nov. 1 in Tulsa. Seeding for the tournament has yet to be determined with matches being played Saturday night and on Monday.
