DeLand, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF novice rowing team took to the water Saturday morning for the first regatta of the fall season. The Hatter Classic, hosted by Stetson University, was the women's first shot at competition versus other universities. Stetson, Nova Southeastern and Florida Tech also had boats entered into this weekend's competition along with the Golden Knights.
While the main focus for the weekend was getting the novice squad experience and showing it could battle through tough conditions, UCF also entered its fourth varsity eight squad into the Hatter Classic.
The morning started with many competitors soaked due to the strong storms that rolled through the central Florida area early Saturday. Luckily the rain stopped in time for racing to begin, and there was a lot of action for the UCF Golden Knights in the mid-morning races. Florida Tech took the victory in the varsity eight competition with a time of 19:29, while UCF was able to take third place with a time of 20:26.
In the novice eight race, UCF swept the top four positions and placed a boat in the sixth position with the Stetson squad preventing the top-five sweep. The UCF "A" boat took the victory with a time of 21:44, followed by UCF "C" at 22:54, UCF "B" at 22:56 and UCF "D" at 24:28. As the day progressed the wind picked up and even though UCF did not have boats entered in the novice four competition, the last two races had to be cancelled due to the high winds.
