Windermere, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - With plenty of heat in the air Sunday at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club, it was a familiar program that rose to the top after the first round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational. Two-time defending champion Georgia sat in the middle of the pack throughout the day but rose up at the end en route to posting a three-over 291.
A few teams flirted with going under par during the round, but the course did not give in. The Bulldogs jumped to first thanks to Brian Harman's and Hudson Swafford's two-under on the back nine. They both completed Sunday in a five-way tie for second with a two-under 70.
Florida's Toby Ragland shot a one-under on the front and a two-under on the back for a three-under 69 and take sole possession of the lead. He helped the Gators bounce back after a rough start and tie for fourth when the day came to a close, firing a six-over 294.
In all, Georgia led second-place South Carolina by a single stroke and Tennessee by two. Florida, Oklahoma State and Texas all positioned themselves in fourth, three strokes behind the leader.
Host UCF recorded a 30-over 318 to finish in 18th. Sophomore Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) was the Golden Knights' highest finisher, tying for 55th with a five-over 77. Classmate Kyle Davis (Kennett Square, Pa.) was right behind, carding a six-over 78 to tie for 69th.
Second round of the event begins at 8 a.m. on the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
