Tuscaloosa, Ala. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The ITA Southern Championships kicked off at the University of Alabama Thursday, but UCF did not see much time on the courts due to some bad weather in the area. With play being moved indoors, just two Golden Knights took their racquets out of their bags. But a full slate of matches is set for Friday where the rest of the team will finally get their portion of the tournament started.

In the bottom half of the A singles bracket, sophomore Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) went up against Alabama's Mari Muller in what ended up being close to the last match of the evening. Serrot cruised through the first set, 6-1, only to drop the second, 6-2. The third set belonged to the Golden Knight, though, as Serrot topped Muller on her home court, 6-3.

One of the first matches Thursday had junior Anna Yakimchenkova (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./American School) go up against the top seed, Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets' top player is also ranked No. 2 in the nation, and Miller took the first set 6-0. Yakimchenkova threatened to take it to a third, but came up short by falling in the second set, 6-4.

Two rounds of doubles, the second round of A singles, the first and second rounds of B singles and the first round of the consolation singles draws are on tap for Friday.
