Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF will take part in a growing volleyball tradition around the country when the Golden Knights hold their "Dig for the Cure" match on Friday, Nov. 3 versus UTEP. The Golden Knights are one of 26 teams nationally who are dedicating a match in 2006 to raise money for breast cancer research for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
UCF's contest against UTEP is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the UCF Arena.
Fans can help the team raise funds for the Komen Foundation by pledging money per dig earned ($1 or $.10) by the Golden Knights in the match, or by making flat donations. Checks can be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
"This event is another way to expose people to breast cancer awareness," said UCF head coach Meg Colado. "We are excited about raising money for the Komen Foundation and doing our part to fight against breast cancer."
"Dig for the Cure" was started in 2003 by the volleyball team at Charlotte. A year ago, Charlotte, along with several other programs across the country, raised a combined $22,000 for the Komen Foundation. This season, all 12 teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference are scheduled to participate, as well as squads from the ACC, BIG EAST and Conference USA.
The Komen Foundation was established in 1982. Today, the foundation is a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
