Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF dropped a 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 32-30) match to East Carolina in Conference USA volleyball action at the UCF Arena on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Serna (San Antonio, Texas/O'Connor HS) paced the Golden Knights with 12 kills.
UCF (5-14, 1-7 C-USA) had a chance to win game three, but the Pirates recorded two-straight points to break a 30-30 tie. After an attack error by UCF sophomore middle blocker Jenny Heppert (Lawrence, Kan./Free State HS), the Pirates' (14-9, 5-4) Kelley Wernert recorded the match-clinching kill.
East Carolina hit .206 for the contest, compared to .146 for the hosts.
Freshman outside hitter Erin Campbell (Kansas City, Mo./North Kansas City HS) had nine kills in the losing effort. UCF freshman setter Andrea Youngblood (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County HS) registered a match-high 37 assists and freshman libero Tricia Scott (Miami, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) tallied a match-best 15 digs.
Wernert led the Pirates with 20 kills. Heidi Krug dished out 33 assists in the victory and Trish Monroe posted 14 digs.
For the second-consecutive game, UCF players wore pink ribbons in their hair to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The Golden Knights return to action on Friday, Oct. 20, facing C-USA foe Memphis. UCF's next home contest is scheduled for Nov. 3 against UTEP.
