ORLANDO - After opening the 2006-07 season with three impressive performances on the links, the UCF men's golf team climbed into the top 25 for the first time during head coach Nick Clinard's tenure. The Golden Knights moved to No. 24 in Golfstat's rankings Oct. 11, the highest showing by a Conference USA program.
"It's wonderful to be ranked in the top 25," said Clinard. "We've played pretty well in the fall, but we have to work even harder to be one of the top 10 programs. Those teams are ones that can sustain that ranking so we really want to get in the top 10 year after year. The Isleworth tournament will give us the opportunity to continue to move up and get into the top 20."
The Golden Knights host the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational Oct. 22-24, which includes last year's NCAA Champion No. 8 Oklahoma State. No. 3 Georgia has won the last two events, as 13 teams in the top 25 are entered into this year's field of 18.
UCF began this season in Japan at the Topy Cup at the beginning of September. But it returned to the States for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate and finished fourth out of 15 teams. In the Golden Knights' last event, the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, they placed third out of 10 teams. Overall, they moved to 268-24 in the Golfstat rankings, which is a head-to-head, round-robin record against all programs.
