BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a tournament that features eight programs that were listed in either the top 25 or as receiving votes in the preseason edition of the Golfworld.com coaches' poll, the UCF men's golf team shot a two-round score of 585 (+9) Monday to sit in second place. The Golden Knights will enter the final round of play Tuesday nine shots behind leader Alabama.
After the first round, UCF stood in fifth place with a seven-over 295, but had N.C. State and Michigan State closely behind by just a stroke. However, the Golden Knights had three golfers fire a second-round score of even par or better to climb above the likes of Tennessee and Florida State into second place. Alabama, which began the season No. 15 in the nation, carded a 288 in both rounds to have a slight cushion entering the final day.
UCF sophomore Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) finished Monday tied for 10th overall, posting a one-over 73 and an even-par 72 for a 145. Junior Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) also fared very well with a three-over 75 and an even-par 72 for a 147 and place tied for 20th. Freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal), who completed round one with an 80, stormed back to shoot a two-under 70. That 70 tied for the fourth-best second-round score in the entire field.
Although UCF moved from fifth to second, Florida State and Tennessee will be threatening to take over that spot as the Seminoles and Volunteers are just two shots behind the Golden Knights.
