Gordon, Doubles Tandem of Carati and Hunter Bring Home Tennis Titles

Sept. 24, 2006

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Although she won the Flight B main draw title, there was not much to celebrate since senior Becky Gordon (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain) had to defeat a teammate in the finals of the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational. Gordon edged freshman Zoe Kent (Valrico, Fla.) to claim first place in singles Sunday, and junior Jennifer Carati (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and senior Megan Hunter (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) cruised to the Flight B doubles championship, giving up just 13 games in four matches over the weekend.

All four student-athletes were competing in their first tournament of the season, which was hosted by Rollins College. Gordon dropped the first set to Kent, 6-2, only to win the next two sets, 6-1, 7-5, for the Flight B title. Gordon was forced to defeat two teammates en route to first place, as she edged Carati in the semifinals a day earlier.

Carati and Hunter played two matches in the Flight B doubles draw Sunday. After a close 8-6 win over Stetson's Maja Milandinovic and Katherine St. Clair, the UCF duo got the breaks of serve they needed in the finals in an 8-3 victory over Rollins' Anastasiva Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji.
