ORLANDO - The UCF men's golf team returns to action on Monday at the second annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. The 54-hole event will be hosted by UAB and features 12 teams that were ranked among the top 60 in Golfweek's 2006 final rankings.
Defending champion LSU leads a 15-field team returning for the two-day event, slated for Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25-26 at the Shoal Creek Golf Course, which hosted the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championships. "This is going to be a good test for our team on what is a great course," UCF head coach Nick Clinard said. "This is an opportunity for us to play against an elite field and try to get a victory."
The Golden Knights opened up their fall season two weeks ago at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan where they finished fourth among 10 collegiate teams from the United States and Japan.
Sophomore Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led UCF finishing in a tie for seventh in Japan and is among the five golfers set to compete for the Golden Knights in Birmingham. The line-up features only one new name from the five who played in Japan.
Forest will be joined by junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and fellow sophomores Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) and Kyle Davis (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville). True freshman Neno Henriques (Funcal, Portugal/The Pendleton School) will make his collegiate debut in the event.
Prior to last year's event, Shoal Creek had been without a major collegiate tournament for nine years. One of the finest jewels of the South, Shoal Creek has played host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship and 1986 U.S. Amateur, and will also be the site of to the 2008 U.S. Junior Amatuer.
The event commences Monday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. CT. Following Monday's two rounds, the final 18 holes will begin on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m., with set tee times beginning on holes No. 1 and No. 10.
