Women's Tennis Stays in Town for the Rollins College C.L. Varner Invitational

Sept. 20, 2006

ORLANDO - After two student-athletes represented UCF women's tennis at the season-opening Thomasville Collegiate Invitational in Georgia, the Golden Knights resume the fall campaign with a short trip to Winter Park, Fla., this weekend. Rollins College is set to host the 2006 C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational beginning Friday with championship matches slated for Sunday.

Other schools joining UCF include Barry, Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech, Florida Southern, Hillsborogh C.C., Lynn, North Florida, Stetson, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and host-Rollins.

UCF's schedule may change since the injury bug has recently made its way to the team. But before the action gets underway, sophomore Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) earned the top seed in Flight A of the main draw. Meanwhile, junior Anna Yakimchenkova (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./American School), one week removed from winning the backdraw of the Thomasville Collegiate Invitational, received the No. 6 seed for this weekend's event. Senior Megan Hunter (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) and sophomore Kenza Belbacha (Casablanca, Morocco) also will be taking part in the Flight A main draw.

The Golden Knights have four student-athletes in the Flight B main draw, including senior Becky Gordon (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain), juniors Jennifer Carati (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Kyla McNicol (Winnipeg, Man.) and freshman Zoe Kent (Valrico, Fla.). In doubles action, Serrot and Yakimchenkova serve as the top seed for the event. Other pairings will be Gordon and McNicol, Carati and Hunter and Belbacha and Kent.

For most of the Golden Knights, on tap for Friday are a round of singles matches and two rounds of doubles matches. In last year's tournament, Gordon and Yakimchenkova both advanced to the Flight B singles final where they elected to not play the match and share the title instead.
