Sept. 20, 2006
ORLANDO - For the UCF women's golf team, the 2006-07 season-opening tournament will be one of the most competitive events in program history. And it all begins Friday. The Golden Knights and the Central Florida Sports Commission co-host the 2006 Golf Daytona Beach Women's Fall Preview at the LPGA International's Legends Course Friday-Sunday, which features nine of the top-10 teams from a year ago and 17 of the top 20.
Head coach Emilee Klein completed her first year at UCF in 2005-06 by guiding the Golden Knights to two runner-ups, their highest finish in over three seasons, and a tie for third in the Conference USA Championships. They join the strongest field of the entire college season for this weekend's event: 2006 NCAA Champion Duke, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 4 Southern Cal, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Auburn, No. 8 Purdue, No. 9 California, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 11 Florida, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 15 Arkansas, No. 16 Virginia, No. 17 UNLV, No. 18 Oklahoma State and No. 19 Texas A&M (final 2006 rankings).
The 54-hole event will take place on the same course that is the site for the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Championship scheduled for May 22-25, 2007. The home of the LPGA headquarters, Daytona Beach and the Legend's Course also is the site of the LPGA Qualifying School.
This weekend's tournament includes an 18-hole practice round Thursday, with Friday and Saturday's competitive rounds kicking off at 8 a.m. Sunday will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. All rounds are open and free to the public.
