Tanagura, Japan - UCF sophomore Greg Forest fought through a stomach ailment in his first round at the Topy Cup Intercollegiate to grab the overall lead with a four-under par, 68 on Tuesday. The strong play of Forest, a 2005 All-Freshman honoree by Conference USA, has the Golden Knights in sixth place in the team standings following round-one action of the squad's opening event of the 2006-07 season.
Arizona State leads the 10-team field after shooting a 289, which is one-over par on the par-72 course at the Tanagura Country Club. All-American Niklas Lemke led the Sun Devils with a three-under 69. The Golden Knights stand in sixth place after combining for an 8-over, 296. Sophomore Preston Brown posted the second-best score among the Golden Knight golfers with a two-over par, 74. Brown was followed by freshman Mike Stern with a 76 (+4) and fellow classmate Kyle Davis, who fired a 78 (+6).
UCF is one of four American teams competing against six Japanese teams in the three-round tournament set to conlude on Thursday. Round two action is scheduled for Wednesday.
