THOMASVILLE, Ga. - In what was called the best tennis tournament in the state of Georgia a year ago, the UCF women's team was represented by two players at the Thomasville Collegiate Invitational, marking the Golden Knights' first action of the new season. Junior Anna Yakimchenkova (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./American School) remains alive and will continue singles play Saturday.
In the first round, Yakimchenkova lost to Georgia State's Dariana Kozmina, 6-3, 7-5. Teammate Elvira Serrot (So., Madrid, Spain) also fell, dropping a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Tammy Kevey of West Florida. Yakimchenkova and Serrot were then forced to play each other in the backdraw, with the junior advancing, 6-1, 6-3.
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles are on tap for Saturday's schedule.
