ORLANDO - Junior Selin Kuraly recorded a goal and an assist to lead No. 2 Florida State to a 2-0 over UCF at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Seminoles improved to 5-0, while the Golden Knights fell to 3-3-1.
The two squads battled through driving rain in the opening minutes of the first half and both earned quality chances. Senior Michelle DeCespedes (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) broke in alone in the 35th minute, but her shot went wide left.
The match remained scoreless until the 37th minute. FSU sophomore Katrin Schmidt served a free kick into the box and UCF goalkeeper Jennifer Manis (Pensacola, Fla./Washington HS) came out to challenge. After the ball bounced off some players, it landed on the foot of junior Selin Kuraly, who shot into the empty net.
At intermission, the Seminoles had a 10-5 advantage on shots and earned a 4-0 margin in corner kicks.
In the 55th minute, sophomore Mami Yamaguchi had the opportunity to give FSU a 2-0 lead but Manis made the save. Just over ten minutes later, Yamaguchi collected ball off a corner kick by Kuralay and found the back of the net.
UCF's best chance to score in the second half came off the foot of senior Kate McCain (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood HS) in the 77th minute. Her close shot from left wing was saved by Florida State keeper Ali Mims.
The Seminoles finished the night with a 22-6 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks. Mims stopped two shots for the win, while Manis made six saves.
