ORLANDO - Senior outside hitter Maina Heming recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs as the UCF volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 30-26) victory over visiting Stetson on Friday evening at the UCF Arena. Junior outside hitter Schanell Neiderworder added a match-high 13 kills for the Golden Knights (1-0).
UCF hit .333 in the opening game, compared to the Hatters (0-1), who hit -.250. For the match, UCF had a .296 attack percentage, while Stetson hit just .017.
"I was pleased with the effort tonight," said UCF head coach Meg Colado. "Overall we were consistent and this is a good start to the season for our team."
The match was part of the four-team UCF Fall Invitational tournament. The Golden Knights improve to 64-6 all-time versus Stetson.
UCF senior setter Leah Alexander totaled 33 assists. In her collegiate debut, freshman libero Erin Campbell had 13 digs. Senior middle blocker Jana Mitchell recorded seven block assists for the Golden Knights, who had 12 total team blocks.
Karla Readshaw paced the Hatters with 24 assists. No Stetson player had more than six kills.
The Golden Knights will conclude the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday. UCF faces BYU at 10 a.m. and then concludes the weekend with a contest against Florida International at 7 p.m.
In the opening match of the tournament, BYU claimed a 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-24) victory.
