ORLANDO - Rain and lightning forced the UCF football team to practice inside Nicholson Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Knights practiced for two hours indoors.
Sunday marked the first time during the 2006 preseason that the team had to practice in the fieldhouse due to inclement weather.
The practice ended with juniors Michael Torres and Nick Beucher attempting field goals. On Saturday, UCF head coach George O'Leary's team also worked on special teams, including a long period focusing on kickoff coverage.
"We are really working on special teams because I am trying to find some of the younger kids who can help us there," said O'Leary. "That is where they can initially help you. I am trying to see if guys can get in the two-deep there. That will mean a difference as far as playing time also."
Midway through Sunday's session, the first team offense worked against the first team defense in the red zone. After senior quarterback Steven Moffett found sophomore wideout Rocky Ross for an early touchdown, the defense dominated the period. Senior defensive end Chris Welsh recorded a sack and sophomore cornerback Johnell Neal had a pass breakup.
UCF will have its final two-a-day session on Monday. The Golden Knights are scheduled to practice from 9-11:10 a.m. and again from 7:30-9:15 p.m.
