NEW YORK, N.Y. - UCF junior right-handed pitcher Tim Bascom and UCF signee Jacob Brigham were both selected in the sixth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday afternoon. Brigham, one of the top right-handed pitchers in the state of Florida, was selected with the 178th pick in the sixth round by the Texas Rangers.
Bascom was taken five spots later by the San Diego Padres with the 183rd selection in the same round. The two joined UCF recruit Glenn Gibson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) to hear their names called during the first six rounds of Tuesday's draft.
"I was really excited to hear my name called," said Bascom. "The Padres are an outstanding organization and if I do sign, hopefully I can move up pretty quickly within the organization."
Bascom was a First-Team Conference USA selection in 2006 after posting a 5-6 record and 2.47 ERA in 80.0 innings of work. He finished the season with 90 strikeouts and held opponents to a .215 batting average.
