May 14, 2006

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The UCF women's rowing team raced in four "B" finals on Sunday as it concluded competition at the Aramark Central/South Sprints on Melton Hill Lake. UCF placed fourth in the South Region with 193 points.

UCF's varsity eight boat, which is ranked 19th nationally, crossed the finish line at 6:41.47 to finish fifth. No. 14 Michigan State (6:34.90) won the race and Louisville finished second at 6:37.15.

Ohio State won the regional championship with 366 total points. The Golden Knights finished 10th out of 21 crews. Host Tennessee (294), claimed the South Region title, followed by Virginia (284) and Louisville (227).

"I am very proud of how the team performed this weekend. All of our boats advanced to the A/B semifinals and with the level of competition at this championship, that in itself is impressive," said UCF head coach Leeanne Crain. "The first varsity eight faced an extremely competitive field today. They raced really well all season and have set a new standard for future UCF teams."

UCF's top finish of the day came in the varsity four race. The Golden Knights took third at 7:47.56, just over two second behind second-place Tennessee (7:45.13).

In novice eight action, UCF's 7:20.89 was good for fourth.
