UCF's Geyer Named Head Women's Basketball Coach at Jacksonville State

May 3, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - UCF assistant coach Becky Geyer was named the head women's basketball coach at Jacksonville State on Wednesday.

After being named to Gail Strielger's staff as an assistant coach in June 2005, Geyer was responsible for guiding the talents of the guards and helped seniors Shayla Smith and LaShay King leave their marks. Smith was ranked third in Conference USA in assist/turnover ratio (2.18), while King tallied 128 assists, an effort that lists her in the UCF top 10 all-time for assists in a season. Geyer was promoted to first assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Golden Knights in April.

"We're excited that Becky had the opportunity to become a head coach at the Division I level," said Striegler. "She was an instrumental in helping guide our team through its inaugural season in Conference USA, so I have no doubt that she will do a fantastic job at Jacksonville State."

A member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 2003, JSU posted an overall record of 11-17 and a league mark of 9-11 last season as the Gamecocks lost to Samford in the first round of the OVC Championship.

"I really appreciate the opportunity Coach Striegler afforded me at UCF. Because of her leadership and guidance, I am able to move into a head coaching position," said Geyer.

Prior to her appointment at UCF, Geyer spent 13 seasons as head coach at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she led the Tigers to a 229-107 record and four appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team won the national title in 2003.

Geyer was selected as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Coach of the Year and Molten/Women's Division III National Coach of the Year in both 1995 and 2003.

Geyer holds a bachelor's degree in education from Northern State and a master's degree in education from Illinois State.
