April 7, 2006

ORLANDO - The visiting Stetson men's tennis team posted a 4-3 victory over UCF on Friday afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Golden Knights drop to 10-9 with the loss.

Stetson (17-4) has won nine-consecutive matches. The hosts opened the contest by claiming the doubles point, but the Hatters took four of the six singles matches to earn the victory.

"We started off strong in doubles and I was pleased with that," said UCF head coach Bobby Cashman. "We just did not have enough fight today playing against a very good team in Stetson."

The Golden Knights opened singles play by taking wins at No. 5 and No. 6, but Stetson responded with victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. Marcus Echtler, ranked 109th nationally, clinched the win for the Hatters at No. 1, rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over UCF sophomore Alamgir Wali.

At No. 5, freshman Brock Sakey eased past the Hatters' Birger Soiland, 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman Jimmy Roesch posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Eddie Majcher.

UCF recorded a pair of doubles wins to open the contest. At No. 3, Roesch and Sakey combined to top Soiland and Mario Cayo (8-2). Junior Sebastian Delgado and freshman Tarek Ben Soltane held on at the top spot to defeat Echtler and Serguei Boulanov, 8-6.

The Golden Knights conclude the 2006 regular season at home on Sunday, hosting in-state foe Jacksonville. The match at the UCF Tennis Complex is set to begin at 1 p.m.
