IRVING, Texas - UCF men's tennis standout Brock Sakey was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Friday. Sakey posted a 16-5 singles record in the Golden Knights' first season in C-USA.
This spring, Sakey won all four his matches against conference opponents, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 position against UAB's Andre Maier in the league championship. He recorded a 9-2 mark at the No. 5 spot and went 4-2 at No. 4, while finishing his rookie campaign by winning seven of eight matches.
Sakey is the first Golden Knight to earn conference rookie of the year honors since 2003, when Ener Gursoy was recognized as the top freshman in the Atlantic Sun.
The league's head coaches selected the postseason award winners.
UCF sophomore Sinan Sudas earned a spot on the all-league second team. Sudas won 10 matches during the spring, including eight at the No. 1 position. On March 1, he garnered C-USA Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after recording three wins at No. 1 versus league foes as UCF defeated Memphis, UAB and Southern Miss at home.
Sudas finished the spring with a 10-10 singles mark. He registered one victory against a nationally-ranked opponent, holding on for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over No. 104 Amanjot Singh of Louisiana-Lafayette. A year ago, Sudas was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.
Head coach Bobby Cashman's squad finished the campaign with an 11-10 mark. The Golden Knights, who had four freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and no seniors on the roster this spring, went 3-1 against C-USA teams. UCF earned the fifth seed in the league championship.
