ORLANDO - Redshirt sophomore pitcher Brett Bordwine pitched six shutout innings out of the UCF bullpen as the Golden Knights shutout UAB 9-0 in Conference USA action Friday evening at Jay Bergman Field. The game was delayed one hour and fifty-five minutes due to lightning.
The Golden Knights moved to 22-19 overall and 5-5 in C-USA play while UAB lost its 19th consecutive game. The Blazers fell to 13-26 overall and 0-10 in league play.
Junior pitcher Tim Bascom started for UCF and worked three scoreless innings before the game was delayed. The right-hander yielded just two hits and struck out three before lightning arrived in the Orlando-area.
Bordwine (2-1) pitched extremely well out of the UCF bullpen, tossing a career-high six innings. The Melbourne product fanned six and yielded just three hits.
UAB totaled five hits on the night.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after three innings.
UCF scored one unearned run in the first and plated two runs in the second. Freshman shortstop Eric Kallstrom singled home a run with two outs and junior third baseman Matt Ray followed with a RBI-double in the second.
Freshman right fielder Dave DiNatale launched his first career home run with a three-run shot in the third inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
After the lightning delay, senior catcher Ryan Bono collected his first RBI of the night with a RBI-single to center to extend the lead to 7-0 in the fourth.
UCF added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to close out the scoring, 9-0.
Bono and Ray each collected three hits as UCF totaled 12 hits on the night.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. from Jay Bergman Field.
Game Notes: UCF is 18-2 when recording 10 or more hits in a game. The Golden Knights are 20-5 when they outhit the opposition.
