Lightweight Rowers Compete Against Nation's Best

April 10, 2006

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The UCF women's rowing team competed against some of the top crews in the nation this past weekend at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River. UCF's varsity lightweight eight boat was in action at the regatta, advancing to the grand final on Sunday morning.

The Golden Knights placed third in the heats on Saturday and then finished fifth with a time of 7:31.3 on Sunday. Radcliffe won the race, clocking in at 7:08.9. UCF finished just behind Georgetown (7:30.1).

Princeton finished second at 7:12.3, followed by Wisconsin (7:17.2).

Saturday's heats were delayed due to cold and windy conditions, but resumed in the evening.

"The boat handled the conditions and the pressure of racing high profile crews very well," said UCF assistant coach Corrie McGrath, who guided the team in New Jersey. "They fought hard to stick with Georgetown and rowed a good race. I am happy with the results and looking forward to building speed for our meeting with Stanford."

UCF will return to action on Saturday, competing in the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif.
