March 17, 2006

ORLANDO - The UCF women's tennis team won its second consecutive match, defeating Buffalo, 5-2, at the UCF Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.

After the Bulls (8-2) grabbed the win at No. 2 doubles, the Golden Knights (7-5) rebounded with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 to earn the point.

UCF continued the momentum into the singles competition as junior Becky Gordon took a quick 6-3, 6-1 win over sophomore Tina Jacob at the No. 6 position followed by senior captain Pamela Fernandez defeating UB junior Miglena Nenova, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1.

After losing at No. 3, the Golden Knights insured the win as sophomore Anna Yakimchenkova battled back against sophomore Natalie Dean at No. 4. She lost the first set 7-5 before taking the final two sets 6-0, 6-2. It was her third consecutive win.

At the No. 2 position, UCF freshman Elvira Serrot used a tiebreaker to defeat senior Kristen Ortman, 6-4, 5-7 (10-7), while sophomore Smaranda Stan won the final match of the day for Buffalo, which had its winning streak snapped at five.

"We have a lot of respect for Buffalo," said UCF head coach Patricia Allison. "After playing a majority of their matches indoors, they were able to come out and really play a solid match against us. In the end, it will only make us a better team."

Next up, the Golden Knights host Minnesota on Saturday at 9 a.m.
