UCF Claims 2006 Home Opener

Feb. 5, 2006

ORLANDO - The UCF men's tennis team had a solid showing in singles play as it claimed its 2006 home debut on Sunday morning, topping UT-San Antonio, 5-2, at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Golden Knights (3-1) won five of six singles contests.

Junior Sebastian Delgado clinched the win for UCF, topping Adam Becker at No. 4 (4-6, 6-0, 6-2). The Roadrunners, who fall to 0-2 on the year, opened the match by taking the doubles point.

"We started slowly in doubles, but came out firing in singles," said UCF head coach Bobby Cashman. "The guys are working hard and doing a great job early in the season."

Freshman Jimmy Roesch had a quick win at No. 6, defeating Shaun Michael Stewart, 6-3, 6-3. Fellow freshmen Brock Sakey and Norman Alcantara were also two-set winners. Alcantara posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position over Anthony Portois. At No. 5, Sakey eased past Hetori Chaves, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Sophomore Sinan Sudas topped Andre Moreira at No. 1. Sudas claimed the first set, 6-3, but Moreira bounced back to take a 6-4 win in the second. In the super-tiebreaker, Sudas posted a 10-3 victory.

The match was originally slated for Saturday, but was postponed due to rain.

In doubles play, Alcantara joined Sudas at No. 1 to give UCF its only win. The pair recorded an 8-5 victory over Robin Fernandes and Moreira.

The Golden Knights open a four-match road swing on Saturday, facing Georgia State in Statesboro, Ga.
