ORLANDO - UCF head football coach George O'Leary announced Monday that Brent Key has been promoted to tight ends coach. Key, who replaces D.J. McCarthy on the coaching staff, served on the staff last season as the team's offensive graduate assistant coach. O'Leary also announced that offensive coordinator Tim Salem will now also coach UCF's wide receivers.
"On my coaching staff, I have always tried to promote from within the program and keep coaches who are familiar with our system," stated O'Leary. "Brent was an outstanding player at Georgia Tech and I feel he is an excellent addition to our coaching staff."
"I am excited to join Coach O'Leary's staff after playing for him at Georgia Tech and also working as a graduate assistant here at UCF," said Key.
A former standout at Georgia Tech under O'Leary, Key was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets at right guard.
Key was an all-conference lineman and one of the anchors of the Tech offense. During his four-year career, he helped Tech rank in the top three in the ACC in rushing all four years. Key started 43 games for the Jackets and was part of a senior class that has earned four straight bowl berths, a first for the Tech program since 1951-56. Key played in the Rotary Gridiron Classic in Orlando, following his senior season.
Key was a first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 2000. He helped Tech rank in the top-20 nationally in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense, as well as in the top three in the ACC in rushing. He was also part of an offensive line that led the ACC in fewest sacks allowed with 16, including only 14 by the starting five. He was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his performance against Maryland, when he helped the Jackets pile up 547 yards of offense, including 193 yards rushing.
