ORLANDO - Senior forward Shelby Weber went 11-for-12 from the field to score 24 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as UCF dropped Memphis, 77-62, in Conference USA women's basketball action at UCF Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Playing in its home season finale, UCF improved to 4-10 in C-USA and 6-19 overall, while visiting Memphis dropped to 1-13 in conference and 3-22 overall.
The Lady Tigers opened the game with six unanswered points and pulled away 8-2 at 16:00 before the Golden Knights took charge and kept the visitors without a field goal for four minutes. They would tie the score at eight all on long jumper by junior guard Francine Houston.
At 9:37, UCF took control of the scoreboard for the first time as Weber completed a three-point play and sparked a 16-8 run. The Golden Knights increased their advantage to as much as 10 on a trey by Houston, but Memphis was able to close the gap to 31-26 at the intermission.
In the first period, UCF shot 13-of-31 (41.9%) from the floor, while the Lady Tigers went 9-for-23 (39.1%). The host also owned a 17-15 advantage on the boards.
The Golden Knights regained the momentum and extended their lead to 42-27 on a 9-1 run in the opening four minutes of the second half before Memphis cut it back to five on a jumper by freshman guard Paris Leonard at 14:01.
Still, the home team continued to dominate, going up by as much a 16 on a layup by senior guard LaShay King with 4:22 remaining to play. The two squads traded points down the stretch as UCF held on for victory.
The Golden Knights finished the afternoon shooting 31-of-62 (50%) from the field and pulled down a 33-26 advantage on the glass. The Lady Tigers shot 20-for-46 (43.5%) from the floor and also hit 16-of-19 (84.2%) attempts from the foul line. UCF was 9-for-11 (81.1%) from the charity stripe.
Memphis junior guard Devin Necaise recorded a game-high 28 points despite the loss, while two other Golden Knights scored in double figures. King sank 15 and Houston added 13.
The Golden Knights finish the season on the road visiting Marshall on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. before traveling to East Carolina for their finale on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.
