ORLANDO - Jeremy Papelbon pitched 7.0 shutout innings and tallied seven strikeouts to lead North Florida (4-3) to a 13-0 shutout victory at UCF (1-4) Saturday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. The Golden Knights were shutout for the second consecutive game for the first time since 1993 when Vanderbilt and LSU handed UCF back-to-back shutout losses.
North Florida is the first team to shutout UCF in two consecutive games since Rollins and St. Leo blanked the Golden Knights in back-to-back games during the 1983 season, head coach Jay Bergman's first year at UCF.
The Ospreys scored four runs in the first inning, including a three-run home run by Damon Olinto to take early control of the game.
UNF hit three home runs on the day and exploded for a six-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Matt Oxendine led UNF with three hits as five Ospreys recorded multi-hit games.
Kiko Vazquez led UCF with two hits. The freshman first baseman finished 2-for-4 to up his team-leading batting average to .333.
The two teams resume their three-game series Sunday at Jay Bergman Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
