ORLANDO - With the bases loaded and one out, North Florida pinch runner Brian Wilson scored the game's only run to hand the Ospreys a 1-0 victory in 10 innings over UCF Friday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. Wilson scored on a close play at the plate as UCF catcher Ryan Bono dropped the throw from third base to give North Florida (3-3) the one-run victory.
The two teams combined for just seven hits in the 10-inning contest.
"We pitched pretty well," said UCF head coach Jay Bergman following the game. "We told the players all week long that you going to have one or maybe two chances with the bases loaded and if you don't cash in, you are not going to win. We pitched well and played good defense until the end with the error."
UCF (1-3) dropped to 14-10 all-time under Bergman in home openers and 22-12 all-time in the first home contest of the season.
The Golden Knights threatened to tie the contest in the bottom of the 10th. Bono drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyson Auer. The Ospreys ended the threat with two ground outs to end the game.
UCF missed a golden opportunity to win the game in the ninth inning, leaving the bases-loaded in the frame.
Brian Brooks (1-1) was tagged with the tough-luck loss for UCF. He allowed just one unearned run over 1.2 innings and struck out two batters. UNF reliever Josh Papelbon (1-0) worked 2.0 scoreless innings for the victory.
The last 1-0 loss for UCF was on April 12, 2003 at Belmont in the first game of a doubleheader.
Preseason All-American Tim Bascom started for UCF and worked 7.1 innings. The Dunedin native yielded just two hits and struck out five.
The two teams resume their three-game series Saturday at Jay Bergman Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
