ORLANDO -- UCF and Conference USA announced the 2006 Golden Knights football schedule on Thursday. The schedule features seven home games, including two on national television. The Golden Knights currently have three contests set for national television on ESPN or ESPN 2 in 2006. Additional television games could be added when CSTV releases its 2006 television schedule.
UCF set a school record with five national television appearances in 2005, including three games that were broadcast on ESPN.
The 2006 schedule for the Golden Knights features nine games to be played on Saturday along with three weeknight games set for ESPN or ESPN 2.
"It is exciting for our university and football program to have the exposure of three games on national television," stated UCF director of athletics Steve Orsini. "With our membership in Conference USA, we knew there was a possibility for us to play non-traditional, weeknight games. Due to the success of our football program, UCF is a very attractive option for the television networks."
"I think it is an outstanding opportunity for UCF to receive national exposure with three games on the ESPN networks, no matter what the day is," said UCF head coach George O'Leary.
The Golden Knights open the 2006 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2 at home vs. Villanova. UCF will begin the season at home for the first time since 1999.
Other home games are against USF (Sept. 17), Southern Miss (Sept. 26), Pittsburgh (Oct. 13), Rice (Oct. 21), East Carolina (Nov. 4) and UAB (Nov. 25). ESPN 2 will broadcast the Southern Miss game while ESPN will televise the Pitt game.
UCF opens its road schedule at Florida (Sept. 9). It marks the second meeting between the Gators and Golden Knights on the gridiron. Other road games are at Marshall (Oct. 4), at Houston (Oct. 28), at Memphis (Nov. 11) and at Tulane (Nov. 18). The Oct. 4 game at Marshall will be broadcast nationally on ESPN 2.
The three September home games are a first for UCF in the school's Division I-A history. The Golden Knights joined Division I-A in 1996.
