DAYTONA BEACH - The UCF men's tennis team opened its 2006 season with a victory on Saturday, posting a 6-1 win over host Bethune-Cookman. The Golden Knights (1-0) won all three doubles tilts and claimed five of six singles matches.
All of UCF's singles wins came in two sets. Sophomore Sinan Sudas posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Thabani Sithole at No. 1. At No. 2, sophomore Alamgir Wali was victorious in his Golden Knight debut, recording a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stefan James.
"For the first dual-match of the season, our guys gave a good effort," said UCF head coach Bobby Cashman. "I was very pleased with the doubles play and saw a lot of positives out there today."
Two of the Golden Knights' four freshman - Brock Sakey (No. 5) and Jimmy Roesch (No. 6) - recorded 6-1, 6-0 wins in their first collegiate match.
Sudas and Roesch teamed for an 8-4 No. 1 doubles triumph over James and Sithole. Wali and junior Sebastian Delgado recorded an 8-2 win over the Wildcats' (0-1) Jerome Ward and Fernando Marcato. At No. 3, freshman Norman Alcantara and Sakey earned an 8-2 win over Edson Luiz Gomes and Terry Powell.
The Golden Knights return to the courts on Thursday, facing second-ranked Florida in Gainesville. First serve at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex is slated for 3 p.m.
