ORLANDO, Fla. - Senior Shelby Weber recorded her second double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) of the season as UCF fell to Miami, 82-72, in women's basketball action Tuesday night at UCF Arena in Orlando. The Golden Knights fell to 2-8 on the season, while the Hurricanes improved to 8-2.
Miami opened the game with a 12-4 run in the first five minutes only for UCF to battle back and tie the score at 12 a piece less than a minute later.
The two teams kept the score close until the Hurricanes pulled ahead by nine to make it 29-20 with less than four minutes to play in the half. The Golden Knights responded with a 10-5 run to close out the half with Miami up, 34-30.
Weber paced UCF with eight points and seven rebounds, while Juliana Gomes was second with in points with seven. As a team, the Golden Knights shot 52% from the field in the first half.
For Miami, Tamara James led the Hurricanes with 11 points and six rebounds, while the team shot 42% from the field.
Miami came out of the break with a quick basket by Renee Taylor only to have Francine Houston answer with a three-pointer for UCF.
The Hurricanes then went on a 9-1 run with Taylor scoring five of the points to go up 45-34 with 16 minutes to play in the game. UCF fought back with a 12-7 run to come within seven points with less than 12 minutes to play.
Miami extended its lead to 16, the largest of the night, with 7:52 to play in the game. The Golden Knights came to within 11 after going on a 10-5 run over the next four minutes to make the score 71-60 in favor of Miami.
With one minute to play in the game, UCF began to send Miami to the foul line for free shots. The Hurricanes were 7-for-9 at the line in the last minute.
At the end of the game, Taylor had 23 points for the Hurricanes, while James picked up a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Weber and Houston led UCF with 15 points each.
The Golden Knights return to the court Wednesday, Dec. 28 when the Quinnipiac Bobcats come to town. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
