IRVING, Texas - UCF redshirt freshman strong safety Jason Venson was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Venson set a career-high with 15 tackles (13 solo) and a key fourth quarter interception in UCF's 31-28 victory at Rice to clinch the C-USA Eastern Division Championship. Venson had the highest single-game tackle total for UCF in 2005 to lead the Golden Knights to the win.
It marked the first C-USA Player of the Week honor for Venson. He is the fourth Golden Knight to be named C-USA Player of the Week in 2005.
His critical interception started UCF's game-winning drive at the Rice 31-yard line with just 4:08 remaining in the game.
Venson's 15 tackles were the most by a Golden Knight since Atari Bigby's 17 tackles at Virginia Tech in 2003. He leads the team in tackles (70) in 10 games played this season.
