HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior middle blocker Jana Mitchell totaled 12 kills and added 10 blocks as the UCF volleyball team breezed past host Southern Miss for a 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-24) Conference USA win on Friday evening at the Payne Center. Junior outside hitter Maina Heming recorded a double-double for the Golden Knights (8-16, 6-10 C-USA), finishing with 17 kills and 12 digs.
Mitchell tallied nine block assists to record the fourth-best single-match total in school history. The 10 total blocks were good for fifth on the single-match register. The Golden Knights posted 15 total team blocks.
For the match, UCF hit .280 as a team, compared to .067 for the Golden Eagles (6-18, 0-14). Mitchell hit .480 and Heming had a .452 hitting percentage.
The contest marked the conference regular season finale for both teams.
Sophomore outside hitter Schanell Neiderworder just missed a double-double in the win, totaling 11 kills and nine digs to go with six blocks. Junior setter Leah Alexander had 41 assists and also recorded a pair of service aces.
In game one, UCF hit .300 as a team and led the entire game. The hosts registered only four kills to open the match and hit just -.222.
Morgan Johnson and Ashley Petrinec both had nine kills in the losing effort. Ednali Serralta posted a match-high 13 digs.
The Golden Knights conclude the 2005 regular season on Sunday, hosting Florida Atlantic. First serve at UCF Arena is set for 1 p.m.
