ORLANDO - The UCF women's tennis team will face some familiar in-state rivals when the Golden Knights compete in the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational at Rollins College from Oct. 7-9.
Among the opponents featured in the tournament, which is the second competition of the 2005 season for the Knights, are Barry, Florida Southern, Jacksonville, Nova Southeastern, host Rollins, Stetson and North Florida.
Leading UCF is team captain Pamela Fernandez. The senior is seeded fourth in the Flight A singles bracket, where she is scheduled to open against Catalina Castillo of North Florida at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Also playing in Flight A are freshmen Kenza Jawhari and Elvi Serrot.
In Flight B singles, the Golden Knights are represented by three players. Both sophomore Anna Yakimchenkova and junior Becky Gordon earned first round byes. Junior Megan Hunter takes on Stetson's Catherine Canady.
Hunter and Gordon combine forces as the No. 3 seeded duo in Flight A doubles competition, while the tandem of Jawhari and Yakimchenkova plays in Flight B.
