MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior forward Andy Metcalf scored two goals and added an assist as Memphis defeated UCF, 3-0, in Conference USA men's soccer action at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 7-7-2 overall, 3-4-2 in C-USA as they secured a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. The Golden Knights fell to 6-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in C-USA.
Metcalf opened scoring in the 18th minutes when he gathered a rebound and shot the ball past UCF senior goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh.
In the 33rd minute, the Tigers went up 2-0 when Marcus McCarty scored from 25 yards out on a pass from Metcalf. Memphis finished the first half with a 14-5 advantage in shots.
The two teams were even at 11 a piece in shots in the second period. The Golden Knights earned some scoring opportunities, including one by redshirt sophomore Rafael Teixeira that hit the post.
Metcalf added further insurance for the host Tigers in the 50th minute when he corralled a rebound off sophomore Jared Britcher's original shot and once again found the back of the net. The goal was also assisted by senior midfielder Dayton O'Brien.
McIntosh stopped 10 shots in the loss, his second double-digit save effort this fall. Sophomore Tyler Strom made five saves in 80 minutes for the Tigers before being relieve by classmate Gavin McInerney, who played the final 10 minutes without a save.
The Golden Knights cap off the regular season when they host East Carolina on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and South Carolina on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
