BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A second half goal by junior forward Jersen Monteiro gave host UAB a 1-0 shutout of UCF in Conference USA men's soccer action on Friday night at West Campus Field.
With the win, the Blazers improved to 9-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in C-USA, while the Golden Knights fell to 6-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play.
UAB outshot UCF by a 5-3 margin in the opening half, but the Golden Knights were inspired after intermission, recording a 9-7 advantage on the shot clock.
Despite UCF's efforts, Monteiro was the only player to find the back of the net in the 53rd minute off a free kick. He was assisted by junior midfielders Sandy Gbandi and Brian Garcia.
The Golden Knights continued to pressure the ball in the final 30 minutes of regulation and had goal called back for offsides.
The two teams finished even at 12 all in shots, while UAB held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. UCF senior goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh made five saves and Blazer junior A.J. Robles stopped six shots.
"Our guys played well against a very good team," said UCF first-year head coach Brent Erwin. "With the determination we showed tonight, I thought we deserved to earn a least a tie."
The Golden Knights cap off the road trip with a visit to Memphis for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 30. They finish the season with a two-match homestand against East Carolina and South Carolina beginning on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
