MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Shannon Wing scored the lone goal as UCF defeated Memphis, 1-0, in Conference USA action Friday night in Tennessee. The Golden Knights improved to 8-9 on the season and 5-1 in C-USA, while the Tigers fell to 10-5 and 4-2 in league play.
"We did not play as well tonight as we should have but still found a way to win," said head coach Amanda Cromwell. "The back line held strong and Julie (Snaman) came up big with a couple of saves. That is huge in conference play. We are going to enjoy the night and then get ready for UAB tomorrow."
Roberta Pelarigo paced UCF in shots with three, while there were four others tied for second with two. Julie Snaman picked up her first shutout of the season on eight saves.
Snaman recorded five saves for UCF in the first 45 minutes of action with the biggest stop coming with 10 minutes to play. Memphis' Kylie Hayes challenged Snaman one on one when Snaman made a diving save to preserve the 0-0 tie.
The teams took the tie into intermission with UCF outshooting Memphis, 7-6. The Golden Knights also held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks for the first half.
UCF took a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to play. Courtney Baines served up a corner kick into the goalbox where Wing proceeded to head the ball into the net. Memphis tried to clear the ball out, but it had already passed the line for the score.
At the end of the game, UCF had outshot Memphis, 16-14, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks (4-2).
The Golden Knights return to action Sunday when the team travels to Birmingham, Ala. to take on UAB. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
