ORLANDO - Improving on what some coaches called the best tournament their team had ever competed in was the goal of the organizing committee for the second annual Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational and the results will be evident when 18 of the nation's best teams tee it up at Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla. Oct 23-25.
"There are no majors in college golf, but if there were, this event would have to qualify for that distinction," said tournament chairman Jim English. "The combination of the venue, the field and the first-class treatment the players will receive will make this arguably the best tournament these student-athletes will compete in during their college careers."
The field will be stellar as 13 of the top 20 teams from the latest Golf Coaches Association of America poll (Oct. 7) will be on hand, including defending Isleworth and NCAA champion Georgia. The Bulldogs are the consensus number one ranked team in the country and will be joined by the rest of the top five teams from that poll - Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, UNLV and Duke. The overall depth of the field is proved by the fact that 17 of the 18 teams competing are receiving votes in the top 25 poll.
Individually, three of the top four finishers from last year's event return, including co-medalists Pablo Martin from Oklahoma State and Chris Kirk from Georgia. Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro finished fourth in last year's event and also could contend for the title but that trio will have plenty of company based on the depth of the field. Judging by the numbers, the future stars of the PGA TOUR will likely be on hand as there are currently 74 alumni from the 18 schools playing on the PGA TOUR.
Isleworth Country Club, home to the PGA TOUR's Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara, John Cook and many others, will provide a stern test for some of the world's best amateur players. They can expect a tougher challenge than last year in the form of more rough and faster greens. The change of format to 18 holes per day, barring weather delays, eliminates the fear of running out of daylight and allows the tournament committee to let the golf course to play the way it was designed. From the Tiger tees, Isleworth Country Club is the longest and toughest course in the state of Florida. It will be trimmed only slightly for this event as the total yardage will go from 7,544 to 7,493.
No one will claim that the Isleworth layout was easy last year as only Georgia (-1) finished in red numbers as a team and just seven individuals finished under par. Kirk and Martin shared medalist honors at 7-under-par. The field average for the 54-hole event was 76.33.
The event is only open only to invited guests. The first round begins Sunday (Oct. 23) at 8 a.m.
