ORLANDO - Roberta Pelarigo had a goal and an assist as the UCF women's soccer team defeated Marshall, 3-0, in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon in Orlando. The Golden Knights improved to 7-8 on the season and 4-1 in C-USA, while the Thundering Herd fell to 1-13 and 0-6 in league play.
"All weekend long, different people scored, different people had assists," said head coach Amanda Cromwell. "We were dangerous from all over the field. I think that we were screaming that we are dangerous from many different positions and that teams can't key in on just one player."
UCF scored the first goal of the match in 22nd minute of action. Kristin Bilby took a pass from Roberta Pelarigo and sent it to the top left corner of the net.
Pelarigo attempted to add a second goal in the first half when she sent a bicycle shot screaming toward the goal only to have it go wide.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead into the intermission after taking 16 shots to the Thundering Herds' one. UCF also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks for the first half.
After taking seven shots in the match, Pelarigo netted her eighth goal of the season in the 55th minute of play on a Courtney Baines corner kick.
UCF's third goal of the afternoon came when Michelle DeCespedes sent a free kick into the goal box for Shannon Wing to net.
At the end of the match, UCF had outshot Marshall, 36-5, and had taken seven corner kicks to the Herd's one. Beth Harless had one save in the net for the Golden Knights in the shutout, while her counterpart had eight.
"Miami is going to be much improved from last year because they had a ton of players out with injuries and now those players are back," said Cromwell. "In-state rivalries are always a battle no matter who we are playing."
The Golden Knights return to the turf Tuesday, Oct. 18 when the Miami Hurricanes come to town. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
