DeLand - Despite a wet Sperling Complex course that included spots with ankle deep water, the UCF cross country teams claimed top honors in both the men's and women's races at the Stetson Invitational on Friday.

Paced by the second consecutive first place performance by freshman Chris Mullaney, the men collected 43 points to edge Florida International, which placed second with 54 points. Embry-Riddle was third with 75 points.

Mullaney took the individual title with a time of 27:02. Junior Ryan White was seventh at 27:51 just four seconds ahead of junior Brent White in eighth. Rounding out the Golden Knights' top five were freshman Daniel Conn in 11th place at 28:06 and sophomore Paul Nielsen in 17th at 28:29.

"Because they were coming off two great performances at Loyola and Disney, the guys didn't have as much zip but they still ran hard," said UCF head coach Marcia Mansur-Wentworth.

The women, meanwhile, were led by sophomore Allison Palmer for the second straight week as they earned 44 points to finish ahead of runner-up FIU (55 pts.). Jacksonville took third with 85 points.

Palmer recorded a time of 19:38 to grab third place, while freshman Jamie Rzepecki was fifth at 20:00. Senior Michelle Brouillet ran No. 3 for the Golden Knights and finished 10th at 20:32.

Sophomore Kristen Zieminski was 12th at 20:37 followed by sophomore Elizabeth Miller in 14th at 20:47.

"I was pleased with team's solid performance, especially with effort both Allison and Jamie gave despite the conditions," said Mansur-Wentworth. "Everyone ran well."

The Golden Knights return to action at the 2005 Conference USA Cross Country Championship on Oct. 29 at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
